About the position
This is an exciting role for an outstanding researcher with significant experience in evaluating international development or human rights programs and promoting learning about best practice. The successful candidate will lead the Freedom Fund’s work to measure the impact of its investments in countries with the highest incidence of slavery, and will drive the Fund’s support for research, evaluation, and knowledge- sharing across the broader anti-slavery community. S/he will join a small London-based team and work closely with NGO and academic partners around the world.
Responsibilities
- Act as the focal point for the Freedom Fund’s M&E and research, ensuring adherence to and continually improving the Fund’s M&E framework, helping colleagues interpret and learn from program results, and reporting on impact to senior management, the Board of Trustees and on the Freedom Fund website.
- Identify methods, channels, partnerships and tools in order to communicate evidence about effective anti-slavery strategies to agencies that are actively funding and implementing programs
- Support program team colleagues in identifying critical research questions and commissioning evaluations of Freedom Fund programs.
- Build partnerships with leading academics and researchers working in the anti-slavery field.
- Directly oversee priority research and evaluation projects, including a major study of the prevalence of bonded labour in Northern India, which is set to begin in late 2016.
Qualifications and experience
The Freedom Fund seeks a thoughtful, energetic Senior Research and Evaluation Officer with knowledge of a range of research methods and outstanding communication skills. The successful candidate will have the technical ability and experience to lead the Freedom Fund’s research and M&E, and the talent for relationship building and presenting complex information in simple, attractive ways. S/he will have experience of managing research in international development or human rights, and of using a wide range of methods and partnerships to enable uptake of proven strategies by different actors.
Essential
At least ten years’ of directly relevant experience.
Excellent knowledge of research and evaluation methods and key debates in M&E including strengths and weaknesses of experimental approaches.
Experience supporting colleagues to incorporate research findings into programs, and promoting uptake of good practice across the wider international development or human rights sectors.
Experience working with academic institutions and commissioning external evaluations of programs in developing countries.
Experience working with private and public donors.
Experience with cost-benefit analysis, value for money, and other means of using financial approaches to analyse and present results.
Outstanding written and verbal communications skills and ability to present data in compelling ways
Highly proficient in Excel and Powerpoint (or other presentation software).
Experience in supporting communications and fundraising teams to share information about impact and attract new supporters.
Bachelor’s and advanced degree.
Entitled to work in the UK without work permit sponsorship from the Freedom Fund.
Desirable
- Advanced degree in research methods.
Experience in the anti-slavery sector and in countries with a high incidence of slavery.
Knowledge of languages other than English.

Compensation
£45,000 – £55,000 per annum plus 10% non-contributory pension scheme.
25 days holiday pro rata, plus public holidays.
