ABOUT THE FREEDOM FUND

The Freedom Fund (www.freedomfund.org) is the world’s first private donor fund dedicated to identifying and investing in the most effective frontline efforts to end modern slavery. It:

  • generates private funding by demonstrating how effective interventions can protect those at risk of being enslaved and free those in slavery.
  • invests in those countries and sectors with the greatest incidence of slavery.
  • analyses which interventions work best, and shares that knowledge.
  • brings together a community of activists committed to ending slavery and empowered by the knowledge of how best to do so.

The Fund commenced in January 2014. It now has programs in Northern India, Southern India, Ethiopia, Thailand, Southern-Eastern Nepal and Central Nepal. It currently supports and funds 50 NGOs around the world. It has $50m pledged of the $100m it seeks to raise by 2020. The organisation is headquartered in London, and also has an office in New York.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Reporting to the Managing Director, North America, the Communications Manager will work closely with all members of the Freedom Fund team to enhance the profile of the Freedom Fund within the media and to strategically align all communications with the broader objectives of the organisation.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive media plan for the Freedom Fund including writing and distributing op-eds, media releases and blog posts.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key media contacts.
  • Strategically and successfully place media coverage for the Freedom Fund on an on-going basis.
  • Monitor the news cycle for opportunities.
  • Where needed, work with Freedom Fund donors to effectively communicate and promote their support of the Freedom Fund.
  • Project manage the production of external-facing collateral material and ensure effective articulation of the Freedom Fund’s work.
  • Take responsibility for the Freedom Fund’s social media accounts including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
  • Manage the Freedom Fund’s e-communications efforts including drafting CEO emails to distribution lists and ensuring the quality of e-communications.
  • Work with outside vendors to execute additions and updates to the Freedom Fund’s website.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Established existing relationships within the human rights/social impact media sector or the demonstrated ability to build media relationships in a past role.
  • A strong understanding of media hooks, newsworthy opportunities, the news cycle and media landscape analysis including strong judgment on what kinds of tactics and campaigns will attract local, national and international press attention and the best time to target those stories.
  • A demonstrated track record of conversions from media releases and pitches to coverage in publications with significant readership.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to clearly and powerfully articulate and communicate the Fund’s mission, model, and work.
  • At least 5 years experience in a communications role in the international development or human rights sector. Key personal attributes include:

  • Willingness to work as part of a team in a co-operative and supportive way.
  • Commitment to excellence and a relentless pursuit of results with an exceptional work ethic, strong organisational skills and a can-do attitude.
  • Entrepreneurial and driven individual with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Comfortable planning and delivering multiple activities under pressure to strict deadlines and high levels of precision.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, ability to problem solve and resourcefulness.

COMPENSATION

  • Salary is competitive for international NGO positions, and commensurate with experience.
  • 25 days holiday pro rata, plus public holidays.
  • 10% non-contributory pension scheme.
